Friends of Wombwell Cemetery

Working with the community, for the community, to make Wombwell Cemetery a safer, cleaner, friendlier place!

The friends of Wombwell Cemetery are a voluntary group which started as, and still is, a bona fide branch of the Neighbourhood watch organisation with the aim of making the cemetery a safer, cleaner place for all those who have a lawful buinsness being there.

Friends of Wombwell Cemetery started because of an incident which happened in the cemetery in 2002. An old lady, aged 87, had been visiting her husbands grave. In the process she was mugged but luckily she had nothing of value with her.

The Neighbourhood Watch organisation wanted to make the cemetery a safer, cleaner place for all those having a lawful buisness there.

The group gradually got bigger as more people started to join and help out.

The number of people tending graves has increased by a huge amount since the friends of Wombwell cemetery started. Litter and dog fouling has become less of a problem and Wombwell cemetery is now safer than it ever has been.

On August 9th 2006, the Friends were astounded when they found out they has been nominated for the Queen’s award for Voluntary Service. The award went to the friends and was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire at a ceremony in Barnsley Town Hall. The logo “Unsung Heroes” is shown at the top left corner of the website to show how appreciative we are of the award.
