Wombwell Operatic Society

The Wombwell & District Amateur Operatic Society

Founded in 1933 the first show produced in 1934 was the Mikado. Every year since then (excluding the war years) the society has produced all the major musicals from “Oklahoma” to “Oliver”, “Showboat” to “South Pacific” and “Carissma” to “Carousel”, proudly parading the talents of its many members.

Originally performing at the Pavilion Cinema and transferring to Wombwell Empire, in the mid 60’s the society moved its annual production to Barnsley Civic Theatre where it remained until 1997. Having bought the Zion Church building in George Street, the members of the society set about the task of turning the premises into a theatre. Their determination paid off as at least five productions each year are now presented at the Operatic Theatre to the delight and admiration of the people of Wombwell and surrounding areas.

Over the years the society has spread its wings in terms of the variety and complexity of the shows presented, moving away from its operatic roots to maintain its appeal to audiences offering the Broadway/West End music which is associated with musical theatre in the 21st Century. Each year its flagship main musical show is presented in March, and, as has always been the case, continues to be produced by a professional director (this year’s show being produced by Paul Chandler of Wales) The remaining shows throughout the year are directed by society members and offer a wide variety of music to satisfy the tastes of their ever appreciative audiences.

In a desire to nurture the talents of the young people of the area, the society now has a Youth Section which offers the opportunity for them to develop their interests and talents through musicals and pantomime. The experiences gained through working jointly with the society senior members, benefit all concerned and ensure a prosperous future for this thriving and talented society.
