Cycle Thefts
After a number of cycle thefts were reported in the Wombwell area before Christmas, Wombwell Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) along with the local Crime and Safety Group, decided to tackle the problem by applying for funding from the Police Authority to receive cycle security equipment.
The bid was successful and the SNT received over £800, allowing them to purchase cycling marking kits, bike locks and bike lights to give to members of the public to help promote cycle security and safety.
Cycles can be branded for free by Wombwell SNT and details of the bike and its owner will then be entered onto a database to help trace lost of stolen cycles.
Wombwell SNT PC Paul Bower said, “Securing your cycle could make all the different in ensuring your bike is returned to you if you are unlucky enough to have it stolen from you. We are encouraging anyone who owns a cycle to contact us and we will be more than happy to mark your cycle for you.”
Everyone who has their cycle marked by the SNT will automatically be entered into a prize draw where prizes include free water bottles, bike locks and lights.
To find out more about securing your cycle or to arrange for it to be marked for free, leave a message on the Wombwell SNT contact line and someone will get back to you, 01226 736408.
Getting smart with SmartWater kits
RESIDENTS in the Wombwell area are helping police outsmart thieves by using an invisible liquid containing a forensic signature.
Wombwell and Darfield Safer Neighbourhood Team staff are helping householders secure their possessions by marking them with SmartWater – unseen by the naked eye, but when held under ultraviolet light it shows police the real owner of any recovered property.
The latest people to receive special SmartWater kits are residents at Shroggs Head Close in Darfield. Each bottle of liquid is unique and they can now use theirs to mark all property ranging from hi-tech equipment like cameras and computers to gardening tools and cycles.
“This type of property marking has been proven to deter offenders and reduce crime,”
“and we want to help local people to keep their homes and valuables safe.” said Wombwell and Darfield SNT Sergeant Phil Jenkins.
“Recorded burglaries in Barnsley are at their lowest level for 25 years. But it’s understandable that people are still concerned about this type of crime because of the invasion of their privacy. Hopefully measures like SmartWater will provide extra reassurance.”
Police community support officer Julie Harrop-Rhodes, from Wombwell and Darfield SNT, provided crime prevention advice to all residents benefitting from SmartWater kits, while South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue carried out risk assessments and gave out fire safety tips.
