Neighbourhood Watch Concerns
We As Neighbourhood watch are working closely with other agencies which includes the Fire & Rescue service, Ambulance service and we would urge people to use the Fire and Rescue services to install smoke alarms or if you have had it done and it is over 3 years you need a renewal so give them a call to up date you, some of you may have a fire alarm which is temperamental they can give you a replacement which is not as sensitive. Ring (01142-53-2520) if you are interested but (do not use this number as an emergency cali 999) you will be contacted by them and given a date for their appearance.
Phones
How many in the house or bungalow? The fire and Rescue service say if only one but you have a mobile phone take it to bed with you make sure it is fully charged and this can be a life saver you can give your details to the emergency operators and also the location of yourself, sometimes the wire can be burnt through by fire or even cut by would be thieves this will give you another way of contacting the emergency services if trapped by fire alerting the fire crew to your position in the house so they can extract a quick rescue of your self and any other person with you. In the Barnsley area there have beenSO accidental fires 80% have been the elderly and those who forget they have put the chip pan on go upstairs to run the bath or by other forms of cooking.
Scams – Which are still on going.
- Yet again a telephone call from a firm claiming you have won a competition and to call this number, do not do it as you will be charged an extortionate charge due to you being on hold.
- If you receive a card through the door from a company called PDS ( parcel delivery service) saying they have a parcel awaiting your delivery instructions and you can contact them on 0906- 6611911 DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER as this is a mail scam. If you do call the number you will hear a recorded message you will have already been billed for £15, IF YOU DO RECEIVE a card with these details then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072396655 or your local trading standards office.
- On line & E Mail we have received notification regarding a request for your account and bank details stating that they are in the process of up dating their accounts, this is a scam and originates from overseas do not pass on any of your details as you may become another scam statistic.
- Fraud from your account this is ongoing and if you have used the E bay or internet check your bank accounts regularly some people have had money taken from their accounts. You may receive a call intimating that due to an error with your account you have been paying out too much and they need your details to rectify this do not inform them of any details if you are concerned go yourself to the bank and ask for a account check whilst you are waiting.
- Persons stating they are from the local council and wanting to check your property to see that you have all the energy equipment and that your doors windows are fully secure.
- Persons stating they are Police Officers Do not open the door but ask them what they want they may say to check your home security due to burglaries in the area, ask for their identity card (Warrant card) and to push it through your letter box so you can check with the police they are who they say they are and are supposed to be surveying the street. Officers will not come to your door add lib and will not be offended by having to wait. By telling them of your intentions to call the Police for clarification will be enough to send them away if they are not genuine.
- National Lottery Board this has re-emerged and members of the NHW have received award notification stating that they have won nine hundred and fifty euros only this is another scam please do not respond to it.
- Callers asking for you to sponsor a well known charity by giving a donation using your bank details be aware do not commit yourself to this tell them you are not interested.
- Persons calling as council /welfare officers ask for Identityfication ring the appropriate authority for clarification before giving them entrance.
- Callers two young women at the door saying they are from the energy boards and would like to check your energy bills they say you have been over paying and they will guarantee you will be re-reimbursed within 5 to 15 days, they have no identification but a sheet of paper in their hands these people are not genuine do not allow them in or give your energy bills details or account number, this is the latest one and happened on Friday 02 October in the Wilson street area of Wombwell.
- Mobile Madness If using a mobile phone at anytime be aware who is around you, mobile phones attract robbers set your phone on vibrate rather than on loud ring and do not walk with your head down looking at the phone as you text this can be distracting DON’T TEXT UR SLF IN 2 TRBLE.
